Barely five days after the inauguration of Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, the state House of Assembly yesterday, elected Abraham Ngobere as the new Speaker.
Ngobere, a former Deputy Speaker of the house, was elected following Monday Obolo’s resignation after a closed-door meeting with other members of the house.
The motion to elect the speaker was moved by Bennard Kenebi (PDP Sagbama ll) and seconded by Wisdom Fadi (PDP Kolokuma/Opokuma ll) after nominating Ngobere for the position.
Also elected Deputy Speaker is Michael Ogbere (Ekeremor Constituency 3).
Before his emergence as Speaker, Ngobere, who represents Brass Constituency 3 is a third-term legislator and a former Deputy Speaker of the House, while former Speaker, Obolo (PDP, Southern Ijaw II) is Majority Leader.
Responding to his emergence, Ngobere said he was grateful for the House for electing him Speaker, Bayelsa House of Assembly.
“I promise to work together with all members of the assembly irrespective of a political party and to work with the Bayelsa Government, led by Douye Diri as governor of the state.
“I will ensure that the will of Bayelsa people enjoy the implementation of good policies for the interest of the public, he said.
On his part, Obolo said he was grateful to the members for electing him as their speaker during his tenure.
He said due to the fact that the state had three senators and the present governor came from his district, he had to step aside for another district.
I thank you for the support given me during my tenure as Speaker of the Bayelsa House of Assembly.
“As the Majority Leader now, I will ensure that all government policies are met for the interest of the Bayelsa people,” he stated.
Ngobere, who hails from Bayelsa East Senatorial District, is the first speaker to emerge from the district since the creation of Bayelsa State.
