Cross River State government has expressed optimism that the collaboration
between the navy and the judiciary would go a long way in reducing crime on
Nigeria’s waterways.
The deputy governor, Prof. Evara Esu, stated this at a law conference
organised by the Eastern Naval Command in Calabar.
He said the synergy would enhance the criminal justice system and reduce
crime in the maritime domain.
“This event is significant considering that the rule of law is of
paramount importance in a democratic dispensation. It is also a well
thought-out programme. The Nigerian maritime environment has been
challenged by criminal activities such as crude oil theft, illegal refining
of crude oil, illegal bunkering and piracy among others.
“An event of this nature organised by a military establishment like the
Eastern Naval Command to seek avenues that foster civil-military
relationship in combating this threat is indeed a step in the right
direction,” he stated.
Speaking earlier, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Eastern Naval
Command, RAdm. David Adeniran, explained that the conference was aimed at
addressing challenges affecting the success of maritime operations in the
country.
