Catholic bishop of Bauchi tasks politicians on rule of law

Catholic Bishop of Bauchi, Most Reverend (Dr.) Hilary Dachelem, has identified the high level of corruption in government, lack of clear separation of powers, societal class and interests, the broken justice system, tribalism, insecurity and insurgencies as well as poverty and ignorance as to the major challenges hindering rule of law in Nigeria.

The cleric stated that due to the involvement of top government functionaries in bribery and corruption cases, the enforcement of rule of law had not been tenable in the country, adding that unless the political leaders were accountable, “our democratic experiment might not come out of the laboratory.”

The bishop gave the charge at the 2019 Law Week of the Owerri Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Imo State titled: Democracy And Rule Of Law In Nigeria.

Dachelem also urged political office holders not to take advantage of their positions and the immunity they enjoy to recklessly infringe on the rights of the citizens or assume themselves as being above the laws of the land.
