The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, has hosted officers of the Nigerian Army Intelligence School, Apapa, as part of efforts to strengthen inter-agency cooperation on maritime security and intelligence gathering.
The team, led by the Commandant of the School, Brigadier General David Umaru, visited the NIMASA Deep Blue Operational Base in Kirikiri, Lagos, on Thursday, July 10, 2026. The visit was organised as a study tour to expose military intelligence personnel to the Agency’s maritime security architecture and operational procedures.
Speaking during the engagement, the Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, said collaboration between the Agency and other security institutions remains critical to protecting Nigeria’s maritime domain. He was represented by the Head of the Deep Blue Unit, Mrs. Gladys Owolabi.
Mrs. Owolabi explained that the Deep Blue Project was designed to provide a coordinated response to threats in Nigerian waters through intelligence sharing, surveillance and rapid deployment. She noted that regular engagements with the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police and other agencies have helped to improve situational awareness and operational efficiency.
According to her, the visit by the Army Intelligence School reflects NIMASA’s commitment to building capacity across security institutions and ensuring that personnel understand the dynamics of maritime threats. She added that such exposure will enhance joint planning and improve response time during security incidents.
Brigadier General Umaru said the tour was aimed at giving officers practical insight into how maritime security operations are conducted and how intelligence is processed at the strategic level. He commended NIMASA for its investments in technology, assets and manpower under the Deep Blue Project, and expressed optimism that the knowledge gained would support the Army’s own intelligence functions.
The officers were taken through a facility tour of the Deep Blue Command, Control, Communication and Intelligence Centre, and were briefed on surveillance operations, domain awareness tools and inter-agency coordination mechanisms.
Both NIMASA and the Nigerian Army Intelligence School agreed to sustain the partnership through training exchanges and joint exercises aimed at improving national security.
