NIMASA OPENS MARITIME MUSEUM TO DOCUMENT NIGERIA’S SEAFARING HISTORY

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency has launched a Maritime Museum in Lagos as part of efforts to document, preserve and promote the country’s maritime heritage for future generations.
The facility, located within the Nigerian Maritime Resource Development Centre, NMRDC, Kirikiri, was officially commissioned to serve as a centre for learning, research and public engagement on Nigeria’s maritime evolution.
Declaring the museum open on behalf of the Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, the Agency’s Director of Planning, Research and Data Management Services, Mrs. Aisha Jidda, described it as a major milestone for the sector.
She said the museum has been designed as a repository of Nigeria’s maritime history, bringing together artefacts, archival records, and materials that tell the story of the nation’s engagement with the sea over the years. According to her, the facility will also highlight innovations and milestones in the development of the country’s maritime industry.
Dr. Mobereola noted that beyond preservation, the museum will function as an educational and research hub. He said it is expected to support academic work, deepen public understanding of maritime issues, and inspire young Nigerians to pursue careers in the sector.
He explained that the project reflects NIMASA’s commitment to promoting maritime awareness and ensuring that the contributions of the sector to national development are properly documented and appreciated. He added that the initiative aligns with government’s broader focus on growing the Marine and Blue Economy.
The Director General urged students, researchers, industry players and members of the public to take advantage of the facility. He said visits to the museum will provide better insight into Nigeria’s maritime journey and the strategic role the sector plays in trade, security, and economic growth.
The unveiling of the museum adds to NIMASA’s ongoing programmes aimed at building capacity, promoting safety, and projecting Nigeria’s position as a leading maritime nation in Africa.
