Officers of the Nigeria Customs Service turned out in large numbers at the Maitama Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, June 29, 2026, to welcome Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, PhD, back from Brussels. The reception, marked by a ceremonial parade, was in recognition of his extended tenure as CGC and the WCO Council’s decision to retain him as Chairperson.

Adeniyi’s arrival marked more than a personal milestone. It reflected renewed confidence in his leadership both within Nigeria and among the global customs community. Since taking charge of the Service, he has driven a reform agenda focused on modernizing operations, securing borders, boosting revenue, and embedding transparency through technology and staff development.

On the international front, his record has been equally impactful. Leading the WCO Council, he has pushed for stronger cooperation on trade facilitation, supported modernization drives in member countries, and coordinated responses to illicit trade. The Council’s decision to extend his chairmanship signals broad trust in his capacity to unify different customs systems around shared goals.

The extension comes at a critical period for global trade. With ongoing supply chain pressures, evolving security risks, and the push for digital integration, continuity in leadership is seen as vital. Under Adeniyi’s direction, the WCO has placed emphasis on four key areas. First, simplifying trade procedures to cut time and cost for businesses. Second, building institutional capacity through training and technical support. Third, accelerating customs digitalization to improve efficiency and openness. Fourth, deepening international collaboration to tackle smuggling, counterfeit trade, and terrorism financing. These efforts strengthen Nigeria’s standing as a voice in shaping global customs policy.

Domestically, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval of an extended tenure for Adeniyi sets the stage for deeper reforms at the NCS. The Service is expected to expand automation to reduce manual handling and corruption risks, open up trade facilitation corridors for faster movement of goods, and upgrade border security with intelligence-driven systems. There will also be renewed investment in officer training and welfare, alongside measures to improve compliance and close revenue leakages.

Adeniyi now carries a dual responsibility: steering Nigeria’s customs modernization while guiding global customs strategy. His return to Abuja was therefore both a welcome ceremony and a recognition of leadership that is influencing customs administration at home and abroad.
