By Prince Benson Davies
Union Bank of Nigeria has received certification under the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard version 4.0.1, effective 11 August 2026. The certification places the Bank in line with the most current global requirements for securing payment card data.
PCI DSS is the leading international framework for protecting cardholder information. It outlines technical and operational controls that institutions must maintain to prevent data breaches and fraud in environments where card data is stored, processed, or transmitted. By meeting the v4.0.1 requirements, Union Bank has demonstrated that its systems for credit and debit card transactions are designed to meet strict security benchmarks and to support customer confidence.
The scope of the assessment was extensive. It covered Union Bank’s network infrastructure as well as key payment operations. These included card issuance, ATM and POS acquiring, payment processing, reconciliation, settlement, chargeback handling, dispute resolution, and retail banking services. The Bank was assessed and certified under the Service Provider category.
The process spanned 12 months and involved quarterly reviews to ensure continuous readiness. Multiple departments across the Bank participated, with coordination from business and functional heads. Union Bank worked with Digital Encode as its security partner during the engagement. The final independent audit was conducted by CyberCube, an accredited Qualified Security Assessor.
Speaking on the milestone, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Yetunde B. Oni, said the certification reflects the Bank’s priority on customer data protection. According to her, meeting the PCI DSS v4.0.1 standard confirms that Union Bank’s payment systems and processes align with rigorous global expectations. She added that the achievement is the result of consistent work by staff to safeguard customer information daily.
The certification also ensures that Union Bank maintains uninterrupted compliance with PCI DSS. This is in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s directive that banks must sustain continuous compliance without a break. The renewal strengthens the Bank’s ability to protect cardholders and support secure digital and card-based transactions.
With this development, Union Bank joins the group of Nigerian financial institutions operating under the latest PCI DSS version, as the payments industry continues to raise standards around data security and fraud prevention.
