President Bola Tinubu has approved a fresh six-month extension for the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi. The Presidency confirmed this is the second and final extension granted to the Customs chief.
The initial extension was earlier slated to run until August 1, 2026. With the new approval, Adeniyi’s tenure will now end in February 2027, according to details contained in a statement issued on June 19, 2026 by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
The Presidency explained that the extension is meant to give Adeniyi time to deepen the rollout of the National Single Window initiative and to manage a structured leadership transition within the Service.
As part of the transition plan, the statement noted that Adeniyi will work alongside the Nigeria Customs Service Board to promote qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs. The process will also enforce the statutory retirement of officers who have either reached 60 years of age or completed 35 years in service.
Adeniyi, an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, enlisted in the Nigeria Customs Service in the late 1980s. His career progression saw him attain the rank of Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, and Assistant Comptroller General in 2020. He was named acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023 before President Tinubu appointed him Comptroller General in June 2023.
