NPA: 18 Vessels Discharging, 4 Waiting to Berth, 22 More Expected in Lagos

The Lagos ports are set for a busy week as the Nigerian Ports Authority has disclosed that 22 vessels carrying petroleum products, food items and other essential goods are expected to arrive at the Apapa and Tin Can Island ports between October 27 and November 3.

The Authority made the disclosure in its Daily Shipping Position released on Tuesday, offering a detailed outlook on vessel traffic at Nigeria’s busiest port corridor.

According to the NPA, the expected vessels will convey containers of assorted goods, bulk wheat, diplomatic cargo, general cargo, trucks, bulk gas, ethanol, soybean oil, diesel and aviation fuel.

The wide range of cargo underscores the critical role of the Lagos ports in sustaining national supply chains, from food security to energy distribution and industrial production.

The NPA added that four ships and tanker vessels had already arrived at the ports and were waiting to berth with transformers, general cargo and petrol.

It also disclosed that 18 vessels were currently discharging at the two ports. The vessels are offloading bulk wheat, base oil, bulk fertiliser, general cargo, trucks, bulk sugar, diesel, petrol and containers.

The high volume of discharging vessels reflects sustained import activity and continued demand for food items, petroleum products and industrial raw materials across the country.

Port officials say the steady inflow of vessels is a positive indicator of trade activity and supply stability, particularly for essential commodities such as wheat, sugar, fertiliser and fuel.

The Lagos port complex, comprising Apapa and Tin Can Island, remains the nation’s foremost gateway for maritime trade, handling a large share of Nigeria’s imports and exports.

Stakeholders in the maritime sector have continued to call for improved port efficiency, faster vessel turnaround time and sustained investment in infrastructure to cope with growing cargo volumes.
