NIGERIAN SHIPPERS’ COUNCIL AND NJI SET FOR 18TH INTERNATIONAL MARITIME SEMINAR FOR JUDGES IN ABUJA

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council, NSC, in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute, NJI, is set to host the 18th International Maritime Seminar for Judges in Abuja this week.
The three-day seminar will run from Wednesday, July 22 to Friday, July 24, 2026, at the Ball Room of the Ladi Kwali Conference Centre, Abuja Continental Hotel, formerly Sheraton Hotel. Daily sessions will hold between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., according to a statement by the Head of Public Relations Unit of the Council, Rebecca Adamu.
The event is being organised under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy. Organisers said the seminar has become a key platform for building judicial expertise in maritime law and admiralty practice.
This year’s edition marks 31 years since the programme was first established in 1995. Over the decades, it has grown into one of the most important events on Nigeria’s maritime calendar, bringing together judges, legal practitioners, regulators and maritime stakeholders to deepen understanding of emerging issues in shipping, trade and port operations.
According to the NSC, the seminar is designed to strengthen judicial capacity, promote knowledge exchange, and ensure consistency in the adjudication of maritime disputes. It also seeks to align Nigerian admiralty practice with global standards and international conventions.
Participants are expected to examine topical issues affecting the maritime sector, including cargo claims, shipping contracts, port operations, and the enforcement of maritime regulations. The sessions will also focus on how the courts can support the Federal Government’s agenda for the Marine and Blue Economy through sound legal interpretation and efficient dispute resolution.
The NSC noted that continuous judicial training is critical to improving the business environment in the maritime sector, reducing litigation delays, and boosting investor confidence in Nigeria’s ports and shipping industry.
Since its inception, the International Maritime Seminar for Judges has been recognised as the flagship capacity-building programme of the Council, and this year’s gathering is expected to draw jurists and maritime experts from across the country.
