NCS BEGINS DIGITAL FILE TRACKING AT PTML AS ADENIYI PUSHES CUSTOMS MODERNISATION DRIVE

The Nigeria Customs Service has commenced the pilot deployment of its new Management Information System File Tracker at the PTML Area Command in Lagos. The rollout marks another step in the Service’s broader agenda to digitise internal processes and reduce delays in administrative and operational procedures.

Speaking at the launch, the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, said the introduction of the MIS File Tracker is part of ongoing efforts to deepen the application of technology in the day to day running of the Service. Represented by the Deputy Comptroller General in charge of ICT and Modernisation, DCG Oluyomi Adebakin, the CGC noted that the initiative aligns with the Service’s commitment to improving efficiency, enhancing transparency and facilitating trade through digital tools.

According to DCG Adebakin, the MIS File Tracker is designed as an enterprise platform that will serve all administrative processes within the Service. The platform operates as a Single Sign-On application, which means officers can access a unified data set across all departments for administrative purposes. She explained that the system will handle functions such as leave and pass applications, file tracking, duty roster, internal staff orders, nominal roll and other routine processes.

She added that the platform also includes a feedback mechanism that will allow officers to suggest modifications and improvements as the system evolves. This, she said, will help the Service refine the application and ensure it meets the needs of personnel at all levels. She described the deployment as a further demonstration of the NCS resolve to embrace innovation and align with global best practices in customs administration.

DCG Adebakin recalled that the Service has previously introduced other digital initiatives such as the Nigeria Trade Portal and the Customs Verification Management System. She said the MIS File Tracker builds on those efforts and reinforces PTML’s position as a centre for innovation within the Nigeria Customs Service.

The PTML Area Command was selected for the pilot because of its record as one of the most technologically advanced commands in the Service. The command previously served as the pilot location for the Unified Customs Management System, UCMS, also known as B’Odogwu.

The Acting Area Controller of PTML Command, Deputy Comptroller Nura Miko, expressed confidence that the command will successfully implement the new system and serve as a model for other commands. He said the command is already maximising technology-driven trade facilitation initiatives introduced by the NCS management.

DC Miko thanked the Comptroller General for the trust placed in PTML and disclosed that the command is working to reduce the cargo clearing time for compliant RoRo consignments from the current two hours to one hour. He described the MIS File Tracker as a bold step towards sustaining the Service’s reputation as a leading customs administration in Africa.

“We will justify the confidence reposed in us by ensuring the success of the MIS File Tracker from the rollout stage to full implementation,” DC Miko stated. He added that the command will provide necessary support to officers to ensure smooth adoption and effective use of the platform.

The deployment of the MIS File Tracker is expected to streamline internal workflows, reduce reliance on manual processes and support data-driven decision making across the Nigeria Customs Service.
