Deputy Comptroller M.D. Mundi has formally assumed office as the new Area Controller of the Murtala Muhammed Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, with a pledge to sustain revenue momentum, eliminate leakages and strengthen enforcement at the strategic Command.

Mundi took over on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, following a formal handover ceremony at the Command’s Conference Room, where the outgoing Controller, Acting Assistant Comptroller-General G.A. Otunla, handed over to him.

In his taking-over address, Mundi expressed gratitude to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and the management of the Service for the opportunity to lead the Command. He said he was fully aware of the strategic importance of the Command and the high expectations attached to the office.

He pledged to build on the foundation established by his predecessor and to push the Command to even higher levels of performance.

Mundi said his administration would prioritise revenue generation as a core responsibility, with deliberate measures to block all forms of revenue leakage and ensure full compliance with Customs laws and procedures.

He also promised stronger anti-smuggling operations, to be executed in close collaboration with other security agencies, noting that the Command would remain firm against illicit trade, drug trafficking and other activities that threaten national security and public health.

According to him, efficient cargo clearance and trade facilitation will remain central to his leadership. He assured importers, exporters, licensed agents, airlines and cargo terminal operators that the Command would work to minimise avoidable delays without compromising enforcement standards.

Mundi identified sustained engagement with stakeholders as essential to achieving the Command’s objectives. He said the Command would maintain an open-door policy and deepen dialogue with importers, exporters, licensed Customs agents, airlines, cargo terminal operators and other partners.

He charged officers and men of the Command to uphold discipline, integrity, professionalism and accountability in the discharge of their duties. He stressed teamwork, respect for the chain of command and commitment to the core values of the Service.

He assured stakeholders of leadership anchored on fairness, firmness, transparency and results, while maintaining a peaceful working environment for all.

Mundi urged officers to remain loyal, diligent and result-oriented, noting that the success of the Command would depend on collective effort and shared responsibility.

The ceremony marked the formal transfer of leadership from Otunla, who has been elevated to Acting Assistant Comptroller-General and posted to Human Resources Development, to Mundi, who now takes charge of sustaining the Command’s record of performance in revenue, anti-smuggling and trade facilitation.
