Over 1,000 Internally Displaced Persons in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State have received food support from Fidelity Bank Plc as part of efforts to ease the hardship faced by families displaced by conflict.
The distribution, carried out under the bank’s Fidelity Food Bank Initiative, was done in partnership with the Plateau State Sustainable Development Goals Office and the ABBASID Charity Foundation. Beneficiaries in transit camps across Mangu received food items such as bags of rice, cartons of noodles and tomatoes.
The outreach is one of the bank’s ongoing corporate social responsibility programmes designed to address food insecurity and provide relief to vulnerable Nigerians affected by displacement and economic hardship.
Speaking at the event, Dr Meksley Nwagboh, Divisional Head, Brand and Communications at Fidelity Bank Plc, said the initiative was created to provide immediate sustenance to communities in need. He noted that the choice of Mangu was informed by the scale of displacement in the area and the need for urgent support.
According to him, the bank remains committed to supporting government and community efforts aimed at reducing hunger and improving living conditions for underserved populations. He added that the Fidelity Food Bank has grown into a nationwide platform through which the bank delivers direct intervention to families across different states.
Also present at the distribution was Mrs. Nanbam Danjuma-Lot, Project Coordinator of the Plateau State SDGs Office. She said the partnership with Fidelity Bank came at a critical time for many households in Mangu who are still recovering from the impact of attacks in recent years. She explained that many of the displaced families continue to struggle with access to food, shelter and basic livelihoods. She described the food intervention as a welcome relief and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to working with private sector and humanitarian organizations to support affected communities.
The Founder of ABBASID Charity Foundation, Hajiya Hauwa Abbas, said the collaboration with Fidelity Bank has allowed the foundation to reach more communities across the country. She disclosed that between 32 and 40 communities have benefited from similar food support drives implemented jointly with the bank. She stressed that strategic partnerships remain key to tackling hunger and poverty at scale.
One of the community leaders, Mr. Titus Abednago, Village Head of Changal Community, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed appreciation to Fidelity Bank, the Plateau State Government and all partners involved. He said the food items would go a long way in feeding many households during a difficult period. He also used the opportunity to appeal for sustained peace-building efforts in the area so that displaced persons can return to their homes and farms.
