MDCAN, CDD seek priority for health sector, sustained screening, isolation of cases

The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has lamented that the coronavirus has humbled some of the best organised and well – funded health systems globally, from Italy, Spain and Greece to the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA).

It stated that the U.S., which is now the current epicentre of the scourge, has seen daily increases in diagnoses of new infections and mortality rate with the loss of over of 1000 patients in the past 24 hours.

Briefing journalists at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), MDCAN National President, Professor Kenneth Ozoilo, said this happened despite the enormous resources available to the U.S. health system, before the pandemic and in their robust response efforts.

Ozoilo said it was estimated that there might be records of millions of infections with mortality in the region of hundreds of thousands before the pandemic runs its full course.

Meanwhile, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) has charged Government on the urgent need for it to ramp up screenings and keep testing to find and isolate persons who have contracted the virus.

Its Director, Idayat Hassan, said the lockdown was just a stopgap for the government to find solutions to addressing the issue, adding, “Beyond the daily briefing, government should disclose to Nigerians its foolproof plans for addressing COVID-19.

“It is also important that there is accountability in all the monies to be dispensed. The N15b, Nigerians need accountability mechanisms. For instance, all the food items being shared in Lagos State are fraught with discrepancies, people are claiming they are being given to party faithful, or just too inadequate with a whole street getting one N300 loaf of bread.”
