Don seeks courses on counter insurgency operations to tackle terrorism

Vice Chancellor of the Igbinedion University Okada (IUO), Professor Lawrence Ezemonye has canvassed collaboration and offering of courses on counter-insurgency operations to check insecurity in the country saying, “Security affair is not a one-man affair.”

He made the call at the 2020 first quarter colloquium and lecture of the Buratai Centre for Contemporary Security Affairs (BCCSA) at the IUO with the theme, “Intelligence Support for Counter-Insurgency in the Sahel Region of Africa.”

Delivering a lecture at the event, Chief of Defence Intelligence, Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Sani Usman, advocated a comprehensive response to defeat terrorism.

Ezemonye, who said security was not a one-man show, sought academic programmes on security affairs in tertiary institutions to help proffer solutions to spiralling insecurity in the country, which he said has become worrisome and of global concern.

He said the lecture was aimed at contributing to increasing security consciousness among Nigerians, adding that the BCCSA would, among others provide security training and studies to students and staff members, as well as members of the public seeking knowledge on contemporary security issues.

“By creating a platform for public education in the security challenges our country is facing under the auspices of the BCCSA, the Igbinedion University believes in contributing its quota to fostering security consciousness and an element of civil-military relations among the population of our country,” Ezemonye said.

He expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai for his support to the centre and office of Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI) for their encouragement and acceptance to speak on national security.
