FIBOP 2026: $1trn Economy Achievable With Massive Capital Inflows – NGX Group Chairman
By Prince Benson Davies
The Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group, NGX Group, Alhaji Dr. Umaru Kwairanga, says the Federal Government’s target of building a one trillion dollar economy is achievable if Nigeria can attract massive capital inflows to fix infrastructure and drive enterprise growth.
Alhaji Kwairanga stated this on Saturday, October 17, 2026, after being honoured as the Capital Market Personality of the Year at the 2026 Annual Conference and Awards of the Finance and Business Online Publishers, FIBOP, held in Lagos.
He expressed delight at being part of the conference, describing this year’s theme, Unlocking Nigeria’s Economic Potential: Taxation, Industry, Insurance, Fintech, Trade and Investment as Catalysts for Nigeria’s One Trillion Dollar Mission, as apt, current and timely for national economic discourse.
The NGX Group Chairman commended FIBOP for selecting Dr. Muda Yusuf as Conference Chairman and Mr. Taiwo Oyedele as Guest Speaker, noting that both are vastly knowledgeable and deeply committed to advancing Nigeria’s economic fortunes.
According to him, while both speakers had comprehensively addressed the conference theme, it was important to emphasize the strategic role of the capital market in achieving the one trillion dollar GDP target.
Alhaji Kwairanga said the Nigerian Exchange Group aligned itself with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s one trillion dollar economy vision from the early days of the administration and has since been working assiduously to attract the investments and capital required to actualise it.
He explained that the Exchange has been strengthening its platforms and processes, broadening its product offerings and expanding the number of listed companies, while also enlightening local and international investors on the positive impact of macroeconomic reforms undertaken by the Tinubu administration.
The NGX Group Chairman disclosed that in recent months, the Exchange has been leveraging the Dangote Refinery Initial Public Offering, IPO, as a platform to showcase Nigeria’s investment potential across the African continent and globally to attract cross-border capital.
According to him, achieving the one trillion dollar economy will depend largely on Nigeria’s ability to mobilise vast amounts of capital to fix critical infrastructure, establish productive and thriving enterprises and create sustainable jobs.
He stressed that only when those fundamentals are addressed will every citizen begin to feel the impact of economic growth.
Those are the things that the Nigerian capital market is focused on and so we believe we remain central to the achievement of that vision and we will not slow down until it is achieved, he said.
Alhaji Kwairanga expressed appreciation to the Finance and Business Online Publishers for recognising the contributions of the capital market through the award.
He noted that the honour does not belong to him alone, but is shared with the highly capable management team of the Nigerian Exchange Group led by the Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Temi Popoola.
He also acknowledged the guidance and support of mentors and industry doyens including Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, CON; Alhaji Aliko Dangote, GCON; Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, CFR; the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Dr. Emomotimi Agama, colleagues on the NGX Board and all capital market operators.
He thanked the organisers and participants for the recognition and support.
