Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has charged the Northern States Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NSCCIMA) to unlock the economic and industrial potential of the North.
Buni stated this at the weekend while hosting the 38th Annual General Meeting of NSCCIMA at Government House, Damaturu.
He said the 19 chambers was the largest regional chamber, which includes the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, adding, “It is also the biggest business assemblage, which has specific interest in Northern Nigeria, established 38 years ago with its headquarters at Kaduna.”
He added that NSCCIMA was seeking to promote the growth of the organised private sector (OPS) in the North so as to accelerate and sustain its economic growth and development.
The governor noted that 17 economic chambers would also provide platforms to articulate the business interests of northern Nigeria, which he said comprises initiating, supporting or opposing legislative, executive or judicial actions in furtherance of those interests.
Buni, who was represented by Commissioner of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Barma Shettima, said the economic vision of state was geared towards industrialisation and self-sustenance.
He said these could be realised through the revitalisation of a decade- long-dormant industries along with agricultural revolution.
“This visit will afford us the opportunity to discuss matters aimed at cementing the already existing cordial relationship and partnership between the Coalition and Yobe State Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (YSCCIMA).
“It will also avail us a window of exploring avenues of promoting the resources and potentials that our state is blessed with. Harnessing the resources will revitalise economic and other business activities in partnership with all stakeholders represented.
“With today’s visit to the NSCCIMA and the OPS, we will open a new chapter towards re-invigoration and refocusing our priorities,” he stated.
According to him, the reinvigoration has already set targets for public and private sector partnerships for the promotion of investments.
“This is to fashion out clear strategies for the implementation of economic development policies of the government. Government has begun to stimulate economic growth by encouraging Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) policy implementation with the Nigeria Shippers’ Council (NSC),” he added.
He also stated that a Trailer Transit Park in Postiskum was already being constructed along with the building of 3,600 housing units across the state by a firm known as Family Homes.
He added that other economic policies implemented this year include construction of Ultra-Modern Market, Damaturu, resuscitation of Sahel Aluminum Roofing Sheet Plant, Woven Sacks Factory and Yobe Flour and Feed Mills also in Potiskum.
A representative of National President of NACCIMA, Saratu Aliyu and National Vice President, Sanusi Maijama’a urged state governors to facilitate jobs and wealth creation in their states.
He pledged NACCIMA’s cooperation and support to accelerate economic development in the states and improve people’s living conditions.
