The Lagos State government has lamented the devastating impact of urbanisation and associated factors to the state’s biodiversity.
Speaking in commemoration of World Biodiversity Day, the permanent secretary, Ministry of the Environment, Abiodun Bamgboye, urged stakeholders to act quickly and positively to forestall further devastation.
This year’s celebration is themed ‘Our Biodiversity, Our Food, Our Health’.
According to him, the biodiversity of Lagos is an essential asset that must be sustainably managed, wisely utilised and conserved for future generation.
“These ecosystems, he said, are home to a rich variety of aquatic and terrestrial plants and animals.
“Sadly, all these features are under serious threat of extinction from a range of causes, which include rapid urbanisation, trafficking and climate change,” he added.
