Hundreds of timber and charcoal dealers have been intercepted in Ningi Council of Bauchi State over illegal felling of trees. The suspects were arrested with five trucks laden with charcoal and logs.
Special Taskforce Against Deforestation in the council intercepted the trucks around Tabla and Jimi villages over the weekend.
The acting caretaker chairman of the council, Saleh Nasaru, said the arrest came as the council intensified efforts to end deforestation in the area.
Speaking through the council’s acting head of administration, Babayo Umar, he said the council had already set up a special taskforce against deforestation, which comprised security agencies, forestry officials and community leaders.
According to him, they are working round the clock to ensure that all forests are protected against the activities of tree fellers.
