RUST recants as ASUU demands probe of FUOYE VC for alleged illegalities

The Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RUST), Port Harcourt, as the unions declined to join the warning strike yesterday.

NASU chairman, Bari Jonah, said the decision was predicated on the fact that the executive did not receive any directive from the national leadership on the strike.

Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Akure Zone, has accused the Federal Government of alleged compromise over allegations of illegal promotions and arbitrary sack of staff members at the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE).

It alleged that some academic staff members of the university were receiving double salaries, while others were given undue accelerated promotions by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kayode Soremekun, without following due process.

But Soremekun debunked the allegations, saying promotions and recruitments so far done by management were ratified by the university’s Governing Council, describing the claims as coming from those who have little knowledge about the operations of the university.

However, ASUU Chairmen from universities in Akure zone, led by the Zonal Chairman, Professor Olu-Olu Olufayo, said at a media briefing that the Federal Government should set up a visitation panel to probe the allegations against the Vice Chancellor, if truly it was committed to the fight against graft.
