For Nigeria to stave off the harrowing effects of global warming, a more concerted action such as a drastic reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases must be taken, experts have said.

The experts made the assertion at the PSRG-Richardson Annual Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) forum in Lagos.

They solicited a halt to human activities that contribute to altering the balance in earth’s atmosphere which promotes global warming.

Such activities include burning of fossil fuel, burning wood, wood products and solid wastes, raising livestock and decomposition of organic wastes in solid wastes landfill, combustion of solid wastes and fossil fuel in industrial and agricultural activities, as well as bush burning and deforestation.

Chief Executive Officer of Richardson Oil and Gas Limited, Akin Osuntoki, who elaborated the submissions of the participants, noted that much results would be achieved in mitigating effects of global warming if everyone made conscious effort to reduce emissions and adapt to renewable energy to protect the environment and humanity.

This year’s forum with the theme, “Global Warming, Real Issues and Our Responsibilities,” was attended by industry experts from different sectors including Rick Kennedy, who represented Managing Director of Chevron Nigeria Limited, as Chairman of the event.

The lead paper was presented by Mrs Omawumi Kola-Lawal of the African Finance Corporation (AFC) just as there were 10 technical paper presentations on relevant industry issues from seasoned professionals.

A major highlight of the Forum was the presentation of Special Achievement Awards to former Managing Director, Niger Delta Exploration & Production Plc, Dr. Layi Fatona and Director, Pillar Oil Limited, Engr. Seye Fadahunsi in recognition of their support to HSSE Management and Local Content Development in Nigeria.

Other highlights of the forum were interactive sessions, corporate exhibitions and a raffle draw for the Modupe Cole Memorial Child and Treatment Home School. Over the years, the PSRG-Richardson HSSE Forum has served as an avenue to share challenges and proffer workable solutions to issues that border on HSSE practices.

The PSRG-Richardson alliance has committed to maintain the initiative’s ideals and to encourage stakeholders in various industries to imbibe the culture of HSSE through regulatory compliance and advocacy.
