Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Toby Okechukwu, has expressed concern over the rising incidents of violence and extrajudicial killings by security agencies in parts of the country.
Okechukwu, who represents Aninri/Awgu/Oji River Federal Constituency of Enugu State, urged the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Muhammed Adamu and heads of various security agencies to put an end to the ugly trend.
The lawmaker who spoke while distributing palliatives to his constituents saying, “I have also noted incidents of violence and agitations in various parts as a result of overzealousness of some security personnel.
“While I appeal to Nigerians to be at peace with one another as we collectively fight the COVID-19, I must caution that times like these demand extreme caution and civility in enforcing compliance with any government regulations and guidelines.”
Meanwhile, the Avocats Sans Frontières France/Lawyers Without Borders France (ASF France) has also condemned brutality and extra judicial killings of civilians by security agents while enforcing government’s lockdown order during COVID-19 pandemic.
In a statement, the ASF pointed out that the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had reported that security agents have killed 18 people in the first 14 days of the enforcement of lockdown regulations on the COVID-19.
Lamenting that the number of casualties has risen in the past few days it stressed that the development was unacceptable, as it was a disregard of their role as protectors of members of the society, insisting that the perpetrators of the act in various states of Nigeria should be prosecuted.
