Police embark on media trial to preempt panel report, says group MOSOP flays FG’s apathy over Ogoni carnages

The Good Governance and Leadership Project in Nigeria (GGLPN) has alleged that the Nigerian Police was embarking on media trial in the Taraba Intelligence Response Team (IRT) killings with the motive of influencing the outcome.

In compliance with President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive, Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin, on Friday, constituted a seven-man panel to unravel the circumstances behind the Wukari incident.

The panel, headed by Rear Admiral I.T. Olaiya, has a representative each from the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Department of State Service (DSS) and the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA).

The Army and Police were expected to stop further media clashes and allow the panel to carry out its mandate.

But GGLPN revealed that the Police kept its onslaught on the Army and was even leaking the progress of the investigation to the media.

In a statement issued by its President, Whyte Odili, the group said such media trial could only truncate the exercise to the extent that the eventual culprits may ultimately evade justice.

Meanwhile, Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has accused the Federal Government of indifference to the spate of killings in Ogoniland, saying but for its apathy, the situation ought to have been reversed.

It also noted that oil production in a heavily contaminated environment and utter disregard for the people’s welfare, was the height of government’s insensitivity.

President of MOSOP, Fegalo Nsuke, in a statement, said despite the killing of over 50 persons weekly, government has done nothing to improve the healthcare delivery system.
