PDP cautions Obaseki against plans to establish Ruga settlement in Edo

Edo State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Dan Orbih yesterday urged the state government to stop its plans to establish Ruga settlement in any part of the state.

Orbih, who spoke at a media briefing in Benin City, gave the warning against the backdrop of controversies and insinuations following Federal Government’s alleged plan to establish Ruga settlements in some states of the country.

He said, “Some state governments like Benue have come out with a clear and unambiguous message of rejection of the unacceptable plans for the establishment of Ruga settlement in the state.

“Edo people reject Ruga settlement. Edo PDP demands a clear statement from the Godwin Obaseki-led government on its position on the Ruga settlement.

Orbih, who noted that in the midst of growing incidents of alleged herdsmen killings in the state, said Edo people are disappointed that the state government has been silent on position on RUGA settlement as it affects the state.

He also urged all those concerned with the unhealthy political situation in the Edo State House of Assembly to shun their internal political differences and think about the greater interest of the state.

“We are watching political events in the state with great concern, especially the lack of cohesion in the state Assembly that is dominated by members of the APC.

“At a time other states assemblies, especially Benue, are passing resolutions, directing and supporting their governor on their rejection of RUGA settlements, most of Edo members-elect are yet to take their seats in the House of Assembly.

“The people are anxiously waiting to see all 24 members resume work and make good laws for those who elected them to represent them.

“We support the constitutional principles of separation of powers, checks and balances, and more importantly, the role of the legislature in a democratic government. The unending bickering in the legislature is disturbing,” Orbih said.
