Panic in Enugu as hoodlums attack Ikerike police station

Palpable fear gripped residents of Enugu State as hoodlums attacked the Ikerike Police Station on Agbani Road, carting away arms.

Sources said no fewer than six police officers were injured during the attack, which took place around 2.00am yesterday by about 10 bandits.

Those injured officers were rushed to the National Orthopedic Hospital, Enugu for treatment.

It was learnt that the hoodlums carted away several guns, police uniforms and other items from the police station, just as they searched a post house attached to the station.

Another source, however, said the attackers removed only three guns but revealed that they wielded dangerous weapons during the invasion.

A visit to the station yesterday showed that security had been beefed up around the area, while the entrance gate to the station was firmly locked and manned by some officers.

The state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the report, saying although some officers were injured, they contained the attackers to the extent that no life was lost.
