NUJ urges Buhari to overhaul security architecture as Kolade, Anya seek re-programming

President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Chris Isiguzo, has called
on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently overhaul the security
architecture to arrest the insecurity of lives and property across the
country.

He stated this in Lokoja, at the grand finale of the 2019 Press Week of
Kogi State Council of NUJ.

Isiguzo, who reminded the government of its principal duty of ensuring
safety of lives and property, described the trend in which lives were being
threatened by hoodlums masquerading as kidnappers, armed robbers and
herdsmen as unacceptable.

Meanwhile, former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Dr.
Christopher Kolade, and former Chairman, Nigeria Economic Summit Group
(NESG), Prof. Anya O. Anya, have called for urgent re-programming of the
country to address the rising case of insecurity.

The elder statesmen, who spoke yesterday in Lagos under the umbrella of
Burden Elders of Nigeria, emphasised that restructuring of the country must
be preceded by re-programming to erase animosities and strife, so that all
conversations could be conducted in an atmosphere that is productive,
fruitful and peaceful.

According to Anya, while it may be true that routes lead into the African
market, it is certain that the road of violence and bloodshed is definitely
not an option in the process that will determine the country’s future.

“For the peace and prosperity of every Nigerian, the drums of war have to
be silenced. Every dark cloud must be dispelled and the confusion must
cease. This can be achieved through inspirational and innovative
leadership. We must explore widely, look deeply, act fast and be ready to
think out of the box,” he said.

On his part, Kolade stressed the need to encourage compatriots to seek
lasting solution to insecurity in the country.

“We share concern for what is happening and we are seeking solutions.
What binds us together is more than what differentiates us. As you leave
your life from day to day, and you allow yourself to be distracted, we
begin to do ourselves in unnecessarily.”

Another member of the body, Dr. Shyngle Wigwe said: “Until you have the
type of situation in the country, you would not appreciate the value of
peace. Whatever has brought the issue of unrest should be dealt with
immediately.”
