NPA’s Efforts Bear Fruit: Delta Ports Record Significant Increase in Cargo Volumes
By Prince Benson Davies
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has reported a significant increase in cargo volumes at the Warri and Koko Ports Complexes, following a comprehensive overhaul of port infrastructure under the leadership of Managing Director Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho. According to operational statistics, the Delta Ports, which house both complexes, now handle an average of 45 ships per month, a development that experts describe as unprecedented.
This surge in activity is attributed to the NPA’s multi-pronged investment strategy, which includes:
– The dredging of the crucial Escravos Channel, which restored the navigational depth necessary for commercial confidence.
– The commissioning of the Escravos and Ramos Signal Stations, introducing a modern vessel traffic management system that provides world-class oversight and safety for the increased maritime traffic navigating the Delta’s complex waterways.
– The deployment of the marine security vessel SPB Likoro, which has added a visible and reassuring layer of protection, a critical factor in mitigating risk perceptions and attracting international shipping lines.
The ports have also recorded a drastic reduction in vessel waiting time, from 2.89 days to 1.99 days, boosting the confidence of shippers and shipping lines alike. With a total of 293,013 metric tonnes of cargo handled, accounting for over 10.7% of Nigeria’s total trade volume, experts believe the NPA’s efforts will provide shippers and shipping lines with more alternatives and permanently address congestion on the Lagos Ports corridor.
The successful implementation of the Landlord Port Model has also contributed to the ports’ resurgence, with concessionaires like Associated Maritime Services and Integrated Logistics Services driving terminal operations with private-sector efficiency and innovation. As the NPA continues to revamp the eastern ports corridor, experts predict that the Delta Ports’ resurgence will have a positive impact on Nigeria’s overall maritime industry.
