By our correspondent
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has deepened its strategic engagement with the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) through a high-level meeting held in Beijing on July 25, 2025—the meeting aimed to explore bilateral knowledge exchange and capacity development in customs administration.
Key Highlights of the Meeting
The GACC shared its structured training system, incorporating virtual reality, 5G-enabled systems, and blended e-learning approaches. In 2024, GACC conducted over 8,000 physical training sessions and developed 360 online courses.
– Nigeria’s Participation in China-Led Initiatives: Over 200 African customs officers, including 89 from Nigeria, have received training since 2023 in areas such as trade facilitation, anti-smuggling enforcement, and digital port operations.
– Mutual Interest in Collaboration: Both parties expressed interest in exploring technical exchange programs, joint research initiatives, and officer exchange schemes focused on regional port systems and cross-border intelligence cooperation.
Outcomes and Future Collaboration
– Customs Modernisation Courses: Nigeria will participate in upcoming customs modernisation courses and officer development training at the Shanghai Customs College.
– Institutional Capacity Building: The engagement aligns with promoting knowledge sharing, harmonising customs procedures, and building an integrated trade infrastructure for sustainable development under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The Nigeria Customs Service, under the leadership of Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, remains committed to strengthening its human capital, advancing intergovernmental partnerships, and modernising customs operations by global standards.
