MOSOP demands palliatives from HYPREP over pandemic

The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has asked the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) for palliatives to cushion the effect of the coronavirus in the Niger Delta region.

In a statement issued by its President, Fegalo Nsuke, the group accused the agency of not taking any steps to assist people in coping with the virus despite a threat to their lives.

Nsuke expressed disappointment over the attitude of HYPREP, saying, as intervention agency, it should be concerned about providing facemask or carry out enlightenment campaign on the pandemic in the region.

Commending individuals and organisations who had made donations to help fight the pandemic, he urged the people to adhere to precautions, especially as recommended by the WHO to contain with the virus.

Reacting, HYPREP Project Coordinator, Dr. Marvin Dekil, said MOSOP’s request was a good one, but it was not part its mandate, urging them to seek palliatives either from the local or state government.

“We would like to assist Ogoni people on COVID-19 pandemic, but there is no such provision in the budget. MOSOP should not condemn us for not embarking on enlightenment campaigns in the region,” he added.
