Martins, Olaopa task govt on insecurity, jobs creation, and vocational education for youths

Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Reverend Adewale Martins, has urged the Federal Government to be more proactive in creating jobs for Nigerian youths.

Martins who spoke with newsmen in Lagos, yesterday while receiving the International President of Young Christian Workers Movement (YCWM), adding that empowering the youths had become necessary to curb insecurity, criminality and illegal migrations among the youths.

He said that if when security would be restored, it would bring development in the country, adding: “It is an opportunity to tell those who are responsible for taking care of our national security to handle it with a little more sense of urgency.

“There are no job opportunities, particularly for young people. There is poverty and dependence that led to illegal migration and attendant slavery.

“At this point in time, we must really call on governments at all levels, to urgently do something about the unemployment situation, although I must add that life is not all about politics and wanting to get into offices. It also involves continuous efforts to ensure that people get the benefit of the fact that they have leaders in government,’’ he said.

Also, Executive Vice-Chairman, Ibadan School of Governance and Public Policy (ISGPP), Professor Tunji Olaopa, has advocated vocational training to tackle youth unemployment and poverty in the country.

He made the call yesterday at the 2018/ 2019 graduation ceremony of the academy in Ibadan Olaopa, who was the keynote speaker at the event, pointed out that vocational training would contribute immensely to human capital development in the country.

His words: “Young people must be smart to help themselves. This is what these ones are doing.

“They should take interest in vocational training. There are two levels of solution to the issue of unemployment in Nigeria. One is state-based, and the other is individual-based.”
