MAJAN President Ugochukwu Commends NPA On Maltok’s Appointment As Image Maker
· Says GM, Corporate Communications Intelligent For Role
President of the Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria (MAJAN), Comrade Ray Ugochukwu, has commended management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) on the appointment of Mrs. Josephine Maltok as the new General Manager (GM), Corporate and Strategic Communications (C&SC) of the authority.
Ugochukwu, who made the commendation in a statement released on MAJAN platform, described Mrs. Maltok as “an intelligent, highly experienced and competent professional to deliver on her new role and assignment in the NPA.”
He said: “The new GM took over on Tuesday from Mrs. Oluyemisi Oyinlola, a lawyer, who held the office for barely one month. By her appointment, industry watchers have again applauded the Managing Director of NPA, Mohammed Bello-Koko, for recognising professionalism by ensuring that the department is handled by well-trained in-house personnel.
“They see this as a clear departure from the ugly tradition established by his predecessors of picking Tom, Dick and Harry from other departments to head a place that is endowed with qualified media and Public Relations (PR) professionals.”
He said the management of the NPA broke the jinx when he appointed Chief Ibrahim Nasiru, who retired last October, as the General Manager of the unit, adding: “Maltok, an old war horse in media and PR management, was for many years, the NPA’s Head of Overseas’ Liaison Office in London. She returned to Nigeria last year to head the Administration Division of the Authority as General Manager from where she was moved to a new position.
The soft-spoken new image maker, who hails from Plateau State, worked as a Public Relations Officer (PRO) in the defunct Western Zone of NPA in Apapa and later moved to the Calabar Port in Cross River State.
“She also worked at the agency’s defunct head office in Abuja after which she was deployed to serve at the former Roll-On Roll-Off (RoRo) Port in Tin Can, Lagos, after heading the PR Unit of the Lagos Port Complex (LPC), Apapa.
“Mrs. Maltok was to later serve as the National Assembly Liaison Officer of NPA in the Abuja liaison office where she later became the Assistant General Manager (AGM). At her promotion to General Manager, the new NPA image maker headed the Servicom Division before moving to the London office.
“Her colleagues and peers have always quoted her as one who prides herself on having “been privileged to work with and mentored by exceptional people”.
Speaking further, he said: “Meanwhile, Mrs. Oyinlola has returned to her former position as General Manager, Legal Services/Board. Within the brief period she held sway at the C&SC, staff members of the department saw her as one who not only hit the ground running but was passionate and full of compassion for them and all stakeholders, including journalists who encountered her.”
