Lagos NUJ Celebrates Nigerian Women, NAWAOJ, On IWD
Lagos State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) yesterday joined the rest of the world to celebrate women as the year 2024 International Women’s Day (IWD) is marked globally on March 9 every year.
In its goodwill message, the NUJ said this year’s IWD with the theme Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress is timely and apt, as it seeks to showcase women as precious jewels who are highly productive in all spheres.
Against this backdrop, Chairman of the NUJ Lagos Council, Adeleye Ajayi, tasked both the private and public sectors with investing more in women to pave the way for greater national growth and development.
“It is no longer news that women are like bridges that connect and uphold any country; hence, their roles cannot be downplayed. Women must continue to be at the roundtable where decisions to help shape the world are discussed,” Ajayi said.
Ajayi, who further urged women to continue to pray for Nigeria so that peace can return to all our communities, said: “If you ask me, I will tell you that beyond being top business managers of several establishments, women are also better prayer warriors than men. This is why we cannot do without women in society and at home, where they are doing everything possible to keep the family safe.”
He said the Lagos NUJ, on its part, will continue to support gender-based policies geared towards the development of women and society at large, adding, “We also rejoice with all NAWOJIANS of Lagos Chapter, while hoping that the days ahead will be fruitful and prosperous for them all.
“On this year’s International Women’s Day, we celebrate the resilience, dedication, and remarkable achievements of Nigerian women across all spheres of life. From the boardrooms to the newsrooms, from the corridors of power to the heart of our communities, Nigerian women have been at the forefront of driving progress, promoting inclusivity, and shaping the destiny of our nation.
“With the theme Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress, it is fitting to pay tribute to the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), led by Hajia Aisha Ibrahim. NAWOJ embodies the spirit of empowerment, advocacy, and excellence in journalism, championing the rights of women journalists and amplifying their voices in the media landscape.
“Through their relentless efforts, NAWOJ has not only shattered glass ceilings but has also paved the way for greater gender equality and diversity within the media industry, a statement from NUJ reads.
It added that under successive leaderships, NAWOJ has been a beacon of inspiration, driving initiatives that promote gender-sensitive reporting, advocate for women’s rights, and empower women journalists to excel in their profession. Their commitment to excellence, professionalism, and inclusivity has earned them the admiration and respect of their peers and colleagues across the country.
Beyond the realm of journalism, Nigerian women continue to make indelible contributions to nation-building, community development, and social progress. They are entrepreneurs, educators, activists, and leaders, breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes, and transforming lives with their passion, resilience, and unwavering determination.
“On this day, let us celebrate the achievements of NAWOJ and its leadership while also honouring the countless Nigerian women who inspire inclusion through their actions, their words, and their commitment to making a difference. Let us recognise their contributions to nation-building, their resilience in the face of adversity, and their tireless efforts to create a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
“As we reflect on the theme Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress, let us recommit ourselves to supporting and empowering Nigerian women, amplifying their voices, and championing their rights. Together, let us build a future where every woman and girl can thrive, where diversity is celebrated, and where inclusion is not just a goal but a reality.
