IMO Scribe Kitack Lim To Visit Nigeria For International Maritime Summit

Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Kitack Lim, is scheduled to visit Nigeria from November 20, 2022, through November 22, 2022, for the Nigeria International Maritime Summit (NIMS) 2022.

At the summit, regional policies and operational perspectives on Decarbonisation and Green House Gas Emissions in shipping will be the focus and will be hosted by the Federal Ministry of Transportation with its affiliates and agencies in collaboration with the organised maritime private sector under the auspices of the NIMS.
Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo, said the Federal Government remained committed to ensuring that Nigeria becomes a major destination for players in the global maritime industry.
On his part, the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh, said Kitack Lim’s visit, which is the first by an IMO Secretary-General to the country in over 15 years, is a testament to the renewed confidence of the international maritime community on Nigeria.
“We are glad that after 15 years, an IMO Secretary-General will visit Nigeria. Our desire is to continue in this stead until we attain a status of not only the hub of maritime activities in the region but also a major player in the global scene,” he said.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NIMS, Dr. Emeka Akabogu, noted that the summit would provide a platform for practical issues in operations and regulations impacting Decarbonisation in Shipping in West and Central Africa to be highlighted, as a catalyst for boosting the Blue economy in the region.
The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Ship Management Limited (NSML) is among the industry stakeholders partnering with NIMASA in the Deep Blue Project operational engagement session scheduled as part of activities during the IMO Secretary General’s visit to Nigeria.

Lim is also expected to have a firsthand experience of some operational activities of NIMASA, which is the focal agency of Nigeria liaising with the IMO under the supervision of the Ministry of Transportation.
