Gregory University begins fumigation of Abia as group unveils plan to save children

The Gregory University Uturu (GUU), Abia state has commenced fumigation and decontamination of selected places in the state, as announced by its Chancellor, Professor Gregory Ibe, who had delivered 850 bags of rice to the state government to distribute 50 bags to each of the 17 councils.

Three GUU ambulances were released to the state government in addition to face masks, sanitisers and personal protective equipment (PPE).

The fumigation and decontamination exercise, which is being effected by the university’s Works Department, has been done at Uturu markets and motor parks, including Abia State University Uturu Motor Park Market.

Meanwhile, Save the Children has launched its Agenda for Action, being a five-point plan for a coordinated community, national and global action to avert a catastrophe that could affect the lives of millions of children.

In its largest appeal in its 100-year-history, the agency aims to raise $100m to urgently keep children and their families safe during the COVID-19 outbreak, which has been described as the most serious threat to global health and security in modern times.

In a statement issued by its Senior Global Media Manager, Rik Goverde, the group warned that the global coronavirus pandemic threatens to devastate children’s health and education, and cause unprecedented protection needs.

Also, Chief Executive Officer of Save the Children International, Inger Ashing said, “We have all watched in horror as the COVID-19 outbreak has turned lives at home and overseas upside down. The pandemic is now spreading across the world’s poorest countries, further crippling fragile health systems where children are already missing out on life saving treatment for malaria, pneumonia and malnutrition.

“It will leave many children without caregivers, out of school and in danger. We only have a matter of weeks to take swift action that will determine how many lives we can save.”
