Government Reassures Stakeholders on VehCAP Implementation
By prince Benson Davies
The Federal Government has assured stakeholders in the automotive industry that the Vehicle Conformity Assessment Programme (VehCAP) is designed to enhance safety and transparency without disrupting trade or causing delays at ports. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) explained that VehCAP builds on existing frameworks to improve the industry’s overall efficiency.
Under the programme, vehicles without certification will not be stranded at ports but will instead undergo customs clearance and mandatory inspection at designated centres. To ease the transition, a 90-day period has been allocated for importers to adjust to the new requirements, accompanied by a nationwide sensitisation campaign to educate stakeholders.
The primary goal of VehCAP is to safeguard lives by preventing the importation of substandard vehicles, thereby enhancing road safety. The government emphasised its commitment to maintaining a business-friendly environment, ensuring that the programme facilitates trade while upholding safety and quality standards.
