FAAN reopens Port Harcourt Int’l Airport for operations as AIB begins investigation into Turkish Airlines’ accident

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the reopening of Port Harcourt International Airport in Rivers State for operations.

FAAN General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu, made the disclosure in a statement in Abuja yesterday.

“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria wishes to inform the general public that the Port Harcourt International Airport has now been re-opened to operations.

“This is by following a careful evaluation and mitigation of the impact of the bush fire earlier reported around the airport and the dissipation of smokes around the air side,” the statement reads.

According to her, normal flight activities have therefore re-commenced at the airport, assuring that FAAN was committed to its core values of safety, security and comfort of passengers and airport users.

Besides, the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) has started investigation of an incident involving an A330-300 aircraft, with registration number TC-LOL, operated by the Turkish Airlines.

General Manager, Public Affairs of AIB, Tunji Oketunbi, made this known in a statement issued in Lagos yesterday.

The statement noted that the bureau was notified that at about 3:30 am local time, on Tuesday, December 31, 2019, the aircraft was en route Port Harcourt from Istanbul, Turkey, with 295 passengers and 11 crew members on board.

According to the statement, the aircraft suffered a burst tyre, while landing on runway 21 of the Port Harcourt International Airport, which made it to veer off the runway and managed to taxi to the new international terminal.

It confirmed that all the occupants disembarked with no injury, noted that the bureau was open to receiving any video clip, relevant evidences or information that could assist in its investigation.

“The Bureau will like to call on the press and the public to respect the privacy of the people involved and not to preempt the cause of the incident,” it added.
