Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has canvassed adoption of a comprehensive response mechanism to contain the pervasive poverty and insecurity in Nigeria.
Addressing stockbrokers on the ‘Facts Behind the State Economic Development’ at the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) in Lagos, he stressed that the issue of insecurity could not be tackled without finding lasting solutions to the causes of crime.
“There is something that has driven ordinary Nigerians, especially the youths, into violence and radicalism. You cannot disconnect the sociological underpinning of the problem,” he stated.
Fayemi said only a collaborative approach with the private sector and other stakeholders in the Nigeria project that could lead to the successful taming of the nation’s security challenges.
He hinted that Ekiti was working with neighbouring states for tighter highways and boundaries to effectively activities of criminals.
The governor disclosed that partnerships were being struck with vigilance groups and mainstream security agencies to tackle kidnapping and banditry on the roads.
Also at the 2019 International Youth Day event in Ado-Ekiti, the governor said the state would continue to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) geared at banishing poverty by 2030.
Stating that the vision was achievable through diligent prosecution of the goals, Fayemi urged the youths to empower themselves intellectually and skillfully to be able to compete with their peers globally.
Represented at the occasion by his Chief of Staff, Biodun Omoleye, the Ekiti governor maintained that government’s social investment programmes must be expanded and made more effective to create jobs for the youths in collaboration with the private sector. He said his state had partnered with the bourse to develop agriculture and turn the economy around.
Besides, the governor said his administration had put in place policies to ensure that Ekiti ranks among the top three states in the ease of doing business index.
Recalling that the state was on the fourth spot in the ranking in 2014 when he left office during his first tenure before sliding to the 32nd position, Fayemi promised to achieve the top three spot target.
He urged investors to take advantage of the business–friendly environment in the state.
Speaking, Chief Executive Officer of the NSE, Oscar Onyema, said: “We acknowledge the governor’s progressive and reform-minded leadership in Ekiti State.”
