A group, Association of Ebonyi State Indigenes in The Diaspora (AESID) has berated Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi for clamping down on journalists in the state.
In a statement by its Chairman, Ambassador Pascal Oluchukwu, the group charged leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to call the governor to order on the issue.
Stating that the development was capable of affecting the party’s chances in Ebonyi in future elections, it insisted that the PDP should caution Umahi against what it described as “undemocratic practices against the media.”
“The recent ban placed on two journalists deployed to Ebonyi State by The Vanguard and The Sun newspapers is not ideal of a democratic party which PDP represents.
“The journalists were being punished not because of their incompetence, but because they demonstrated independent reasoning and have refused to be corrupted or intimidated in the discharge of their duties.
“The PDP needs to caution Governor Umahi against making unguarded and careless utterances capable of undermining the democratic gains of the party in the state,” the statement reads.
