The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has officially commissioned its new secretariat annex, courtesy of Dantsoho. This development is expected to bolster the union’s operations and enhance the overall maritime experience. According to the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the commissioning of the new secretariat annex aligns with the NPA’s vision to generate more containers, create employment opportunities for youths, and modernize the country’s ports and infrastructure. The MD emphasized that relying solely on the old Apapa and TinCan ports, which were built from inception, is no longer sustainable.

Addressing newsmen and stakeholders Wednesday, 4 November, at the Union Secretariat Annex, Osho Drive, Lagos
Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho revealed the Ports Authority’s plan to renovate and modernize the ports for more capacity and efficiency.
“In no distant time, we will modernize the ports—Tin-Can, Apapa, and others. We will ensure that Nigeria takes her place globally. The NPA will have to procure requisite equipment to take care of the ships and cargo, leveraging on technology,” he stated.

He, however, called on other operators within the ports to also up the ante by using technology to improve their operations.

Dr.Dantsoho praised the President-General MWUN, Comrade Dr Adewale Adeyanju, for being very supportive; according to him, under Adeyanju, MWUN has been transformed from what it used to be. He described the PG as naturally very kind and supportive, as he said he looks forward to more corporations with MWUN and other unions where workers will be put first and welfare improved. Dantsoho, however, expects that workers also give more in order to be motivated.
“You need to give more so as to leave the industry better than you met it, so that you look back with a sense of satisfaction.

The PG, who earlier on welcomed the NPA MD, commends Dantsoho for being the first NPA Managing Director to personally visit the MWUN Secretariat; according to Adeyanju, this shows he is worker-friendly.

The president General of MWUN returned the courtesy visit by the NPA MD with a special honor, presenting him with a beautiful plaque, which thrilled the audience and visitors
