The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has cautioned the Federal Government against plans to withdraw troops from restive areas in the country, pointing out that such action will endangered the people’s security.
President of CAN, Rev. Dr. Supo Ayokunle Samson, who spoke in Yola, Adamawa State yesterday at the commissioning of the state chapter secretariat of CAN, stated that based on security reports and killings in some of the restive areas, it was premature to withdraw troops from those states.
“President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement to withdraw military personnel from the crises areas amount to policy summersault.
“He took an oath to defend and protect all Nigerians, so withdrawing troops from restive zones has automatically reverse his oath of office. Therefore, the president should have a rethink of this sensitive issue,” he stated.
Samson, who lamented the alleged massive corruption being perpetrated by top government officials in the present administration, who he accused of pursuing personal agenda against the public interest, blamed the crises in the country looting.
He said money meant for development, which could empower Nigerian graduates through provision of jobs has been diverted to private pockets, forcing the youths to go into criminality to survive.
The CAN President urged the Bubari government to fight corruption based on provisions of the laws and not on party, ethnic and religious affiliations, insisting that the war against corruption has become a tool to attack people with positive but contrary opinions to government’s thinking.
While speaking at the commissioning of building under Catholic Bishop of Yola Diocese, who is also CAN Chairman, Adamawa chapter, Rev. Dr. Stephen Dami Mamza, expressed disappointment over the attitude of some officials of the association, who he accused of working against God.
