Army neutralises terrorists in Borno, FG seeks U.S.’s assistance over insecurity

Troops of Operation Lafiya Dole, under the special response, Halaka Dodo Operations, have neutralised three terrorists in Kirawa border community of Borno State.

Kirawa borders Cameroon, 135 kilometres east of Maiduguri, the state capital.

The terrorists have been hibernating in Ashgashiya and Kughum in Gwoza Council Area of the state.

Army Spokesman, Col. Sagir Musa, in a statement in Maiduguri disclosed that the clearance operations were conducted in collaboration with the Civilian JTF.

He said the coordinated joint operations were targeted at getting rid of remnants of insurgents with Super Camp on wheels.

“The troops came in contact with terrorists, which led to engagement forcing the criminals to flee in disarray due to superior fire power from the troops.

“Consequently, three terrorists were killed during the operation and many wounded. A Cordon and Search mission was conducted in the area and six bicycles and some food items were recovered.”

He said investigation also revealed that the eliminated terrorists were members of the terrorists’ logistic cell, adding that the army did not lose any soldier during the operations.

  Meanwhile, the Federal Government has expressed its willingness to accept assistance from the United States (U.S.) security agencies to boost the capacity of the nation’s internal security agencies under the Ministry of Interior in the areas of tactical security training and national disaster management.

Minister for Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, who disclosed this in Abuja stressed that transnational crimes could best be dealt with, if countries realise that criminalities have become more complex and would require joint efforts to handle.

Receiving a delegation from the California National Guard (CNG) led by its Adjutant General, Major General David Baldwin, the minister, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Georgina Ehuriah, said the issue of security could not be compromised.

The minister therefore, appealed to the U.S. Government to support Nigeria in its determination to rid the country of armed banditry, kidnapping, insurgency, rape and other trans-national crimes through capacity building of personnel of the services under the ministry.

He particularly emphasised intelligence gathering and provision of modern equipment to fight and combat crimes and criminalities.

Speaking, Baldwin expressed the U.S. willingness to continue to support Nigeria by providing relevant professional expertise to the services under the ministry to rid the country of all forms of insecurity, social vices and natural disasters.
