AGF Discontinues Criminal Charge Against Fidelity Bank MD/CEO: Upholding Justice and Fairness
By prince Benson Davies
The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has taken note of the reactions following the discontinuation of the criminal charge against Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of Fidelity Bank Plc.
The Attorney General’s decision to discontinue the criminal charge is a testament to the office’s commitment to upholding justice and fairness. As the chief law officer of the federation, the AGF has exercised his constitutional power to enter a nolle prosequi, discontinuing the prosecution in accordance with the principles of justice and the rule of law.
A thorough review of the case revealed that Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe was neither the account officer nor the Managing Director of Fidelity Bank when the account in question was opened, and therefore, was not connected to the alleged scheme of fraud. This decision is guided by the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law, and is in the best interest of justice and the public.
It is essential to note that this decision does not exculpate Fidelity Bank from the allegations contained in the charge, which is still pending before the court. Rather, it demonstrates the Attorney General’s duty to ensure that justice is served.
We urge the public to allow the legal process to run its course and refrain from speculation or jumping to conclusions. The AGF remains committed to serving the best interest of justice and ensuring that all those found wanting face the full weight of the law.
