SON Alerts To Dangers, Hazards Of Replacing PMS With CNG, LPG

The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has alerted the general public on the hazards associated with using Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as replacements for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise called petrol.
SON, recently, in an interactive meeting in Lagos, stated that handlers of the conversion; must ensure that conversion kits and competency, meet the requirements of the appropriate standards.
The agency, however, stated that Nigerians who choose to replace PMS with CNG or LPG should be conscious of the established safety requirements to safeguard their lives and property.
In a statement issued in Lagos, it further stated that CNG and LPG, as sources of energy, remain invisible, neither can they be felt or touched physically, but can only be perceived through smell.
“Immediately a person perceives the smell of CNG and LPG, the hazard may manifest in seconds, just as when gas comes in contact with heat, pressure or fire, leading instantly to active fire or even explosion,” the statement warned.
However, SON noted that replacing Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) with CNG and LPG as sources of energy for automobiles and for domestic or industrial use is Economical and reduces the threat of carbon emissions.
SON is the highest standardization body in Nigeria empowered by the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and SON Act No. 14 of 2015 to develop standards for all products, commodities, projects, and services.
The agency equally, ensures the implementation of products for the benefit of improving the quality of life and safety of all and sundry in the country.
“For further information and inquiries, the organization can be contacted for standards and guidelines on the appropriate kits for safe conversion of CNG and LPG through its website: www.son.gov.fng. info@son.gov.ng,” the statement added.
