· As Jamoh Dedicates OFR Award To Maritime Stakeholders
Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Bashir Jamoh (OFR), has called for maritime nations to actualize the adoption of modern technology as a means of attaining cleaner and greener shipping in line with this year’s World Maritime Day commemoration theme.
Jamoh, who stated this while speaking on the sidelines of the World Maritime Day Parallel Event (WMDPE) held in Durban, South Africa from October 12, 2022, to October 14, 2022, also stated that Nigeria would seek to contribute to the global push towards reducing emissions from shipping activities.
According to him the theme of this year’s event: New Technologies for Greener Shipping as declared by the IMO, calls for the global family of nations to take action on the decarbonisation of shipping and ports through the use of zero or low-carbon technologies, fuels and infrastructure, adding: “The ultimate goal for Nigeria is to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions across the globe for sustainable development of our local sector.”
As one of the most important maritime events on a global scale, the WMDPE is a definitive stage for the international community to make concrete contributions and progress on collaboration geared at innovative solutions to address mitigation strategies to reduce the maritime transport carbon footprint.
Secretary-General of IMO, Kitack Lim, in his welcome address, highlighted the need for ‘innovation’ and ‘inclusivity’ as shipping voyages to a decarbonised future, in which digitisation and automation will play a key role.
“After a two-year pause in parallel events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is an enormous pleasure to be able to welcome you all here to Durban for the 2022 World Maritime Day Parallel Event.
The parallel event was instituted to provide an opportunity to take the World Maritime theme “on the road” and it is undoubtedly one of the most important maritime events, worldwide.
“Innovation is fundamental to the maritime industry’s successful energy transition. It requires new technologies, renewable alternative fuels and infrastructure to support low- and zero-carbon shipping, along with new financial solutions to support all those practical aspects,” he added.
In addition to the official IMO celebrations held at IMO Headquarters in London since 2005, there has been a Parallel Event hosted by a Member State Director General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Bashir Jamoh, receiving his medallion as Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR) from President Muhammadu Buhari.
At a reception in his honour, Jamoh dedicated his national merit award to all maritime industry stakeholders, who according to him, have worked tirelessly to ensure that the industry serves its purpose.
“I dedicate this award to the industry stakeholders, with whom we have been working tirelessly to ensure that we try to improve on the well-being of the industry. I also dedicate this award to the joint industry, and the international community and to say that we’ll continue to work hard, tirelessly to ensure that our own maritime waterways remain safe and secure.”
Jamoh also thanked the Minister of Transportation, Muazu Jaji Sambo, who surprised him at the event, the governing board of NIMASA, the executive management and staff of the Agency, for their commitment to delivering the dividends of the maritime sector to Nigeria, while pledging to work even harder.
“I will like to thank the Minister of Transportation in particular and all others who joined to celebrate with me and my family today. I want to assure you that the journey has just begun. Whatever I’m doing that made individuals and the country to recognise me, I will have to redouble my efforts.”

Minister of Transportation, Muazu Jaji Sambo, who congratulated Jamoh on the recognition said he (Jamoh) deserved the award and more, citing his dedication to improving the maritime industry and blue economy through his work at NIMASA, especially the Deep Blue Project and other efforts to protect the country’s maritime environment.
