NHRC reports 105 rights abuses in two weeks lockdown

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has disclosed that it received and documented 105 complaints of human rights violations perpetrated by law enforcement agencies.

It also mentioned Sexual Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), saying the report covered March 30 to April 13, 2020, the period of the initial lockdown by the federal and state governments.

The report, signed the Executive Secretary, Tony Ojukwu and released in Abuja, showed that the complaints were monitored and received from 24 of the 36 states of the federation.

The states covered are, Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross River, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu and Ekiti.

Others are Delta, Gombe, Imo, Kaduna, Katsina, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nassarawa, Niger, Ogun, Osun, Plateau, Rivers and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

It explained that of the 105 complaints, Lagos recorded the highest number with 28 incidences followed by the FCT Abuja with 10 cases and Enugu with nine cases.

Others are, Abia, Delta and Nassarawa state with seven, six and five incidences while Rivers and Imo recorded five and four incidences of human rights violations.

In a similar vein, Ekiti, Akwa Ibom, Gombe, Kaduna and Ebonyi states recorded three incidences each, while Kwara, Osun, Benue and Niger states recorded two each, just as Edo, Adamawa, Ogun, Cross River, Kogi, Bayelsa, Katsina and Plateau states recorded one incident each.
