Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said the 13 confirmed cases of coronavirus and two deaths recorded in the state has further made a mockery of the state government efforts to contain spread of the pandemic.
State Chairman of the party, Tony Azegbemi, who noted that the PDP has carefully scrutinised the state government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, said the threat to the lives of Edo people was like a war situation.
“At present, we are in a war situation and politics must be set aside. However, as a key stakeholder in the existence, survival and future of our state and its people, the PDP can describe government’s efforts so far as knee jerk.
“This is scary, judging from the proximity of Edo State to worst affected communities, states in Nigeria including Lagos, Abuja and foreign countries,” he said.
Azegbemi, who urged all Edo sons and daughters home and abroad to support the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, stressed the need to undertake massive screening of citizens and strengthen the stay-at-home order through robust palliatives.
Besides, the Igbinedion University Okada (IUO) has donated hand sanitisers and face masks to Okada Community, saying the donation was part of its community support programme.
It presented the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended hand sanitisers and face masks manufactured at the university to the Odionwere of Okada for distribution to the entire community.
Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Lawrence Ezemonye, who represented by the Registrar, Dr. Edwin Okoro said it was a philanthropic gesture as the university’s contribution to the fight against the spread of COVID- 19
