NIGERIANS SAY NO TO GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms)

NIGERIANS SAY NO TO GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms)Journalist and media representatives in Lagos were gathered to promote Nigeria’s biosafety from the media frontiers. This program was thoughtfully put together by the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) in line with the current drive for Industrial agriculture by some overblown statisticians on an estimated hunger strike come the year 2050, claiming that the population of the world by projection would have increased to a whopping 9.8trillion and the current food production scale would not be able to feed the world.

GMO is an organism created in laboratory by taking genes from one species and forcing them into an entirely unrelated species-in order to achieve a new trait or characteristic that is not possible in nature. The foreign genes may come from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals or even humans.

Worth noting that Nigeria bases its scientific opinion of GMO safety on the information given to them by the same companies trying to sell these products as opposed to independent study.

More importantly, as was stressed, lots of awareness on these modified products are portrayed one sided-this, of course, gives room for questions. The biosafety act of 2015 by the then government was approved based on the information gotten from the promoters of these systems and so it becomes a concern. Do Nigerians no longer have a right to what they eat?

For example, Apples now come in two types-The seedless and the one with seed, maize seed now have two types-Bt-maize and the natural, organic tomatoes and inorganic tomatoes.

Is it not possible to have

-Food sovereignty.

-A technologically advanced system of agriculture.

-Diverse farming. As against modified seeds which largely encourages monocropping.

-Preserved indigenous seeds.
