Why agric promotion policy is not successful, by experts

Experts have attributed the failure of the agricultural promotion policy (APP) to achieve the desired impact four years after its launch to inadequate infrastructural facilities.

According to them, when policies are not backed up by infrastructure such as good roads, preservation facilities, adequate electricity supply, creation of enabling an environment for farmers, credit facilities, among others, such policies are doomed to fail.

President of the Agricultural Policy Research Network (APRINET), Anthony Onoja, who stated this during the fifth APRINET/USAID yearly national multi-stakeholder forum, noted that the inability of farmers to transport the root crops to the market due to bad roads and high cost of transportation has led to a glut of the produce.

He said that to make agricultural policies relevant, farmers and the intended users must be carried along.

Besides, President of the National Association of Nigerian Traders, Ben Ukwoha, stressed that research institutes must redouble effort to produce research that would be beneficial to the farmers, enhance food security and bring agriculture out.
