Wole Soyinka advocates state of emergency in South West over insecurity

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has advocated a declaration of state of emergency due to the insecurity in the South West Zone.

He made the call yesterday in Akure, Ondo State on the sidelines of the D.O Fagunwa Study Group International Conference to celebrate his 85th birthday.

At the conference with theme: Wọlé Ṣóyínká, D. O. Fágúnwà and the Yorùbá Artistic Heritage, he said it would be most appropriate to declare a state of emergency in view of the insecurity in the South West region.

His words: “As regards insecurity in the South West, there is an emergency. There should be a declaration of security emergency through out the land and measures taken accordingly.

“There are many directions of security lapses, you know it here, especially in Ondo State, it is a calamity throughout the whole nation. There is an emergency.

The Nobel Laureate said of the South West geo-political zone should work toward tackling the menace of insecurity.

Soyinka, however, expressed gratitude to the Ondo State Government for celebrating his 85th birthday and the completion of the Dome to celebrate art and culture.

Besides, President of the Living Faith Church, Bishop David Oyedepo has lamented the state of insecurity in the country, saying: “It is not by force that we live together.”

He was reacting to the killing of Ungwar Romi Branch Pastor of the Church, Jeremiah Omolewa, who kidnappers shot after being abducted with his wife and son along the Abuja-Kaduna highway last Sunday.

Oyedepo who said this at the ongoing week of spiritual emphasis, a monthly programme, where he lamented that Nigeria no longer has value for life, adding that the sponsors of the assailants would not go free.
