Experts raise hope for breast cancer survivors, canvass early checks, detention and care

Some medical experts have raised hope of survival for breast cancer patients if the affected persons could adopt self-discipline in their lifestyles, as a preventive measure and early detection to avert death.

An oncologist, Dr. Brenda Nwamuo, who disclosed this view at an awareness programme, noted that although cancer remains the commonest disease among women in Africa, it should not be a death sentence with early detection and mammography manned by highly qualified radiographers and quality treatment.

Dr. Nwamuo of the Radiology Department, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi gave this insight in her paper titled: Overview of Breast Cancer Screening, at the commissioning of the only functional mammography machine in Anambra State installed at Eldorado Multi-specialist Hospital, Awka.

Also speaking, Executive Secretary, Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA), Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi, pointed out that cancer management was possible through early detection and precautionary measures.

On her part, Manager and Matron of Eldorado Multi-Specialist Hospital, Awka, Francisca Chinelo-Isuh, said after four years of operation, the management decided to acquire a mammography machine to address cases of breast cancer in the area.
